Churches of Yaroslavl (Russia)

Weather…

The churches of Yaroslavl represent the peak of 17th-century Russian architecture, a time when the city was a major commercial hub on the Volga River. Most notable is the Church of Elijah the Prophet, constructed between 1647 and 1650 at the expense of local merchants. The architecture is characterized by five green onion domes and elaborate exterior decoration using glazed tiles. Inside, these houses of worship house some of Russia's best-preserved fresco cycles, which blend biblical stories with scenes from daily life of that era. The Yaroslavl school significantly influenced the development of Russian Baroque and ecclesiastical architecture across the entire Volga region. Today, these structures are part of a UNESCO World Heritage site and form the historical core of one of the country's oldest cities.
