Church of the Intercession on the Nerl
The small Church of the Intercession on the Nerl, built in 1165, is considered the unsurpassed lyrical masterpiece of medieval Vladimir-Suzdal architecture. Grand Prince Andrei Bogolyubsky ordered the construction of this architectural swan song in memory of his fallen son, placing it on an artificial mound at the easy on the eye confluence of the Nerl and Klyazma rivers. The isolated, harmonious location on an idyllic floodplain meadow makes the elegant building, constructed from brilliant white limestone, appear almost weightless. Its perfectly proportioned facades are adorned with delicate, highly symbolic stone carvings depicting King David, majestic griffins, lions, and doves. The church survived not only Mongol invasions but paradoxically also an attempted demolition by a local abbot in the 18th century simply because he lacked the funds to pay for the teardown. Surrounded by water and reeds, this "poetry in stone" today attracts travelers from all over the world.
