Oka Nature Reserve

The Oka Nature Reserve, located in the Ryazan region of central Russia, is a heavily forested wetland landscape of immense ecological and scientific importance. The deep, swampy forests and extensive floodplains bordering the Oka River were placed under strict protection in 1935. This reserve has achieved international fame primarily due to two highly specialized, extraordinary breeding centers. First, it is dedicated to rescuing the Russian desman, a rare, near-blind, semi-aquatic insectivore closely related to moles, which is highly endangered due to habitat loss. Second, the reserve hosts one of the world's premier captive breeding stations for rare crane species, including the critically endangered Siberian crane. Here, dedicated scientists dressed in specialized crane camouflage hand-rear chicks before innovatively guiding them along their natural migration routes using ultralight aircraft. The combination of pristine floodplain forests and relentless captive breeding makes it a cornerstone of Eurasian wildlife conservation.
