Tolyatti, idyllically situated on the left bank of the Volga, is synonymous with the Russian automotive industry. Originally founded in 1737 as the fortress of Stavropol-on-Volga, the city was completely flooded in the 1950s due to the construction of the huge Kuybyshev Reservoir and rebuilt from scratch on a higher site. It was given the name Tolyatti in 1964 in honor of the Italian communist leader Palmiro Togliatti, following the historic cooperation with Fiat that led to the construction of the monumental AvtoVAZ (Lada) plant. This factory not only shaped the face of the city but also made it the „motor city“ of the Soviet Union, whose wide, grid-laid avenues and modernist residential districts are typical of the planned architecture of the time.
