Oranjemund is located at the southernmost tip of Namibia, situated at the mouth of the Orange River where it meets the Atlantic Ocean. The town was founded in 1936 following the discovery of significant diamond deposits and operated as a closed mining settlement for several decades. Until 2017, access was strictly restricted to employees and those with special permits, resulting in a unique and isolated community character. The economy is primarily driven by Namdeb, a joint venture between the Namibian government and De Beers. Geographically, while surrounded by the Namib Desert, the town benefits from the Orange River, which creates a lush green oasis in the arid landscape. A notable feature of the town is the resident wildlife, particularly gemsbok, which are known to roam freely through the streets and suburban lawns. Since opening to the general public, Oranjemund has been working to diversify its economy and promote tourism as a sustainable future.
