Lüderitz is a port town on the Atlantic coast in southwestern Namibia, celebrated for its unique Art Nouveau architecture and German colonial heritage. Founded in 1883 by merchant Adolf Lüderitz, the settlement served as the foothold for the German colonization of South West Africa. It is situated in a stark coastal environment, set between the cold Benguela Current and the shifting dunes of the Namib Desert. The town experienced a massive economic boom in 1908 following the discovery of diamonds nearby, leading to the establishment of the now-famous ghost town of Kolmanskop. Currently, the local economy relies on fishing, oyster farming, and tourism, with landmarks such as the 1912 Felsenkirche drawing international interest. Shark Island, formerly the site of a concentration camp during the Herero and Nama wars, now serves as a campsite and memorial. The maritime climate is characterized by intense winds and frequent fog, contributing to the town's distinctively rugged atmosphere.
