Ai-Ais
Ai-Ais, which means 'burning water' in the local Nama language, is located deep within the rugged landscape at the southern end of the Fish River Canyon. The thermal springs are rich in sulfur and minerals, emerging from the ground at a temperature of about 60 degrees Celsius. The resort is a place of stark contrasts, where the soothing thermal waters meet the harsh, dusty beauty of the Ai-Ais Richtersveld Transfrontier Park. It is the legendary end-point for hikers completing the grueling five-day trek through the canyon. The resort features both indoor thermal baths and outdoor swimming pools, allowing guests to soak under the vast desert sky. Surrounding hills offer shorter trails for exploring the area's fascinating geology and unique flora. As part of a national park, the environment is pristine, frequently offering sightings of klipspringer and mountain zebra on the rocky slopes. Accommodations range from simple campsites to well-appointed chalets. On-site facilities include a restaurant and bar. Reaching Ai-Ais requires driving on gravel roads, making a high-clearance vehicle advisable. Due to the extreme summer heat in the canyon, the resort is most popular during the cooler winter months from May to September, which is the optimal time for a visit.
