Aussenkehr is an impressive agricultural hub located on the banks of the Orange River in southern Namibia, known as one of the largest vineyard areas in the Southern Hemisphere. The settlement is situated in an extremely arid valley within the Karas Region, where artificial irrigation from the river enables the production of high-quality table grapes across several thousand hectares. The project was initiated in the late 1980s by Dusan Vasiljevic, who recognized the region's potential for exporting early-season produce to the European Union. During the peak harvest season between November and January, the population of Aussenkehr swells to over 15,000 people due to the arrival of thousands of seasonal workers. Geographically, the site is framed by rugged mountains that provide a sharp contrast to the lush green vineyards in the valley. In addition to agriculture, tourism is gaining importance, particularly due to its proximity to the Ai-Ais Richtersveld Transfrontier Park. The settlement features a shopping mall and essential social services but remains heavily dominated by the agribusiness sector. Despite its economic success, providing permanent housing for the growing workforce remains a significant challenge.
