The Huns Mountains are a remote and rugged range located in the far south of Namibia, situated to the west of the Fish River Canyon. As part of the Ai-Ais Richtersveld Transfrontier Park, the region is defined by its hyper-arid climate and surreal geological features. The mountains are primarily composed of limestone and dolomite from the Nama Group, dating back over 500 million years. The range gained international fame due to the Apollo 11 Cave, where archaeologists discovered the oldest dated portable art in Africa, painted stone slabs estimated to be 27,500 years old. The landscape is characterized by steep-sided canyons and barren plateaus, hosting specialized desert flora such as the 'half-mens' (Pachypodium namaquanum) and various succulent euphorbias. Due to its extreme isolation, the Huns Mountains remain largely uninhabited by humans, providing a sanctuary for elusive wildlife like klipspringers and leopards. For intrepid explorers, the mountains offer a stark, primeval wilderness experience beneath some of the darkest, clearest night skies on Earth.

The mountains are located in a remote part of southern Namibia, usually accessed via gravel roads from nearby towns. Most visitors arrive using specialized 4x4 vehicles suitable for the rugged desert landscape.
Best season
The cooler winter months from May to September are the only sensible time to attempt serious hikes in this arid region. Summer brings dangerously high temperatures that make daytime exploration hazardous.
Terrain & paths
Expect an unforgiving, arid landscape characterized by steep, rocky slopes and deep ravines. There are few established trails, meaning navigation often requires route-finding skills over loose stones.
What to bring
Top-quality hiking boots with ankle support are mandatory for the treacherous, rocky ground. Hikers must carry large quantities of water, sun protection, and reliable navigation equipment at all times.
Parking
Informal parking is typically found at designated lodges or specific canyon viewpoints that act as trailheads. Vehicles should be parked securely and locked, as locations are often extremely isolated.
