Goerke House (Namibia)

Weather…

The Goerke House in Lüderitz is one of the most magnificent private residences in the town and a standout example of Wilhelminian architecture from the early 20th century. It was built in 1910 on the slopes of Diamond Hill for Hans Goerke, a senior official in the local diamond mining company. The building is characterized by its striking blue facade, ornate bay windows, and curved gables that incorporate elements of Art Nouveau design. The interior furnishings were exceptionally luxurious for the period, reflecting the immense wealth brought to Lüderitz by the diamond boom. After Goerke returned to Germany, the house changed ownership several times and was even used as an officers' mess. In the 1980s, it underwent extensive restoration and now functions as a museum and guest house. Visitors can tour the faithfully furnished rooms, which offer a fascinating look into the lifestyle of the colonial elite. From its elevated position, the house also provides dramatic views over Lüderitz Bay and the surrounding coastal desert landscape.
