Fish River Canyon (Namibia)

Weather…

The Fish River Canyon in southern Namibia is a monumental natural wonder, second in size only to the Grand Canyon in the USA. Stretching about 160 km long and up to 550 meters deep, its sheer scale is humbling. The rugged rock faces and the winding path of the Fish River below create a dramatic landscape of deep ravines and ancient geological formations that glow brilliantly at sunset. For serious adventurers, the 85 km Fish River Canyon hiking trail is a bucket-list experience, taking about five days to complete through the heart of the canyon. At the canyon's southern end lies Ai-Ais, famous for its natural hot springs which offer soothing relief for hikers and tourists alike. The surrounding flora includes the iconic quiver tree, which stands as a symbol of the Namibian south. The area has a profound sense of isolation and geological history. Main access is via the Hobas viewpoint, reachable by well-maintained gravel roads. Due to extreme heat in summer, the hiking trail is only open from May to September. For those not hiking, the various lookouts along the rim provide spectacular views and photographic opportunities without the need for a strenuous descent. The best light for photography is during the golden hours of early morning or late afternoon.
