Felsenkirche (Namibia)

Weather…

The Rock Church (Felsenkirche) in Lüderitz is one of the highest-elevated churches in Namibia, perched prominently on Diamond Hill overlooking the harbor town. Built in 1912 according to the designs of architect Albert Bause, it is an outstanding example of Lutheran architecture in the Neo-Gothic style. The church was constructed during the diamond boom, when Lüderitz experienced a period of rapid growth and prosperity. It is particularly famous for its magnificent stained glass windows, which were a gift from Emperor Wilhelm II, depicting biblical scenes and the imperial coat of arms. The building consists primarily of massive stone quarried directly from the site, giving the church its name. The interior features dark woodwork and maintains a tranquil, venerable atmosphere. From the church terrace, visitors have an extraordinary panoramic view of Lüderitz Bay and the surrounding desert.
