Kolmanskop is a renowned ghost town in the Namib Desert, situated approximately ten kilometers east of the port town of Lüderitz. The settlement was established in 1908 after railway worker Zacharias Lewala discovered the first diamond, sparking a massive diamond rush in the region. Within a few years, Kolmanskop transformed into a wealthy enclave featuring German-style architecture, a hospital with the Southern Hemisphere's first X-ray machine, and an ice factory. Following World War I, diamond prices plummeted, and the discovery of richer deposits further south near Oranjemund in the 1920s led to the town's eventual decline. Residents gradually abandoned the site until Kolmanskop was officially declared a ghost town in 1954. Today, the skeletal buildings are partially filled with migrating sand dunes, serving as a museum and a prominent subject for photographers within the Sperrgebiet restricted area.
