Lalla Takerkoust is a man-made lake located about 40 kilometers southwest of Marrakech, formed by the construction of the Cavagnac Dam between 1929 and 1935. The dam was originally built to generate hydroelectric power for the region and to provide a stable water supply for the irrigation of the vast Haouz Plain. The reservoir spans approximately seven kilometers in length and is set against the dramatic backdrop of the High Atlas Mountains' snow-capped peaks. It is primarily fed by the Oued Nfis, a river originating deep within the mountain range. Beyond its critical industrial roles in electricity production and agriculture, the lake has become a vital recreational area for local residents. The lake's ecosystem supports various fish species and attracts a variety of waterfowl throughout the year. During periods of drought, the water level can drop significantly, underscoring the region's reliance on annual rainfall and snowmelt from the nearby Atlas peaks.
