Tinmal Mosque (Morocco)

Weather…

Tinmal Mosque is a significant historical structure in the High Atlas Mountains, regarded as the cradle of the Almohad dynasty. It was built between 1148 and 1153 AD by Abd al-Mu'min, the first Almohad Caliph, at the site where the movement's founder, Ibn Tumart, was buried. The mosque's architecture is of immense importance as it served as a prototype for the more famous Koutoubia Mosque in Marrakech and the Giralda in Seville. Despite its remote location, it features austere yet elegant geometric forms and finely worked archways. Because it remained largely disused after the city of Tinmal was destroyed by the Marinids in the 13th century, its original structure was remarkably well preserved. It is one of the few mosques in Morocco that historically allowed entry to visitors. In September 2023, the mosque suffered severe damage during a major earthquake and is currently undergoing extensive restoration.
