Ifni Lake
Ifni Lake is the largest and highest mountain lake in Morocco, perched at an altitude of about 2,300 meters within the Toubkal National Park. Formed by a massive ancient landslide that blocked the valley, the lake is surrounded by rugged, rocky terrain and profound silence. Its crystal-clear, cold waters perfectly mirror the surrounding High Atlas peaks. The lake is a premier destination for seasoned trekkers. The journey here is physically demanding, often involving the crossing of the Tizi n'Ouane pass, but rewards hikers with one of North Africa's most dramatic panoramas. There is no permanent infrastructure, so visitors camp on the rocky shores under a brilliantly starry sky. Access is typically on foot or by mule from the Berber village of Amsouzert. Along the way, travelers experience the traditional lifestyle of remote mountain communities. Meals during the trek usually consist of fresh bread, olive oil, and mint tea prepared by local guides. The best time for an expedition is from May to September. Swimming in the ice-cold water is only for the brave. Ifni Lake is a place of extremes where the raw power of nature is palpable. It is the well-suited spot for mountaineers seeking a genuine challenge well off the beaten tourist paths.
