Menara Gardens Pavilion (Morocco)

Weather…

The Menara Gardens Pavilion in Marrakech is an iconic landmark set against the backdrop of the Atlas Mountains, famous for its photogenic reflection in a vast central water reservoir. The gardens were originally established in the 12th century by the Almohad dynasty, serving both as a royal retreat and a crucial irrigation source for the surrounding olive groves. The current pavilion, with its distinctive green-tiled pyramidal roof, dates back to 1869 and was built by Sultan Abderrahmane as a summer residence. The massive basin is fed by an ancient and sophisticated system of underground channels known as khettaras, which transport water from the mountains over 30 kilometers away. Spanning approximately 100 hectares, the Menara Gardens offer a peaceful sanctuary from the bustling Medina and are a popular spot for locals and tourists alike. At sunset, the area provides a spectacular panorama as the pavilion and the snow-capped peaks of the Atlas are mirrored in the water. Today, the site is recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site and stands as a testament to historic Moroccan engineering and garden design.
