Boujdour is situated on the Atlantic coast of Western Sahara and is historically famous for Cape Bojador, which for centuries was considered an impassable limit for European sailors. It was not until 1434 that the Portuguese navigator Gil Eanes successfully rounded the cape, marking a turning point in the Age of Discovery. The modern city was significantly expanded after 1976 by Morocco to serve as a key administrative and economic hub in the southern provinces. A prominent landmark is the massive lighthouse that oversees the dangerous coastal waters, symbolizing the city's maritime heritage. Today, the economy is primarily driven by the fishing industry, supported by a modern port that handles large volumes of sardines and cephalopods. Given its desert environment, the city relies heavily on seawater desalination plants for its fresh water supply. In recent years, Boujdour has emerged as a center for renewable energy, hosting large-scale wind farms that harness the consistent coastal winds to power the region's development.
