Djenné-Djenno (Mali)

Weather…

The archaeological site of Djenné-Djenno is recognized as one of the oldest urbanized settlements in sub-Saharan Africa, located in the Inland Niger Delta of Mali. Occupation began around 250 BC and reached its peak expansion between 450 and 1100 AD, before the site was eventually abandoned in the 14th century in favor of the current city of Djenné. Excavations have revealed that the inhabitants practiced iron smelting early on and were integrated into vast trade networks involving gold, salt, and grain. A notable feature of the site is the discovery of numerous terracotta figurines, which provide evidence of a highly developed artistic tradition. Unlike many other ancient cities, Djenné-Djenno appears to have evolved without centralized monumental architecture like palaces or temples, suggesting a unique, less hierarchical social organization. Today, the area is part of the UNESCO World Heritage list and remains a crucial source for understanding West African precolonial history and the origins of trans-Saharan trade.
