Tellem Caves of Bandiagara (Mali)

Weather…

The Tellem caves are located within the sheer cliffs of the Bandiagara Escarpment in Mali and represent a fascinating archaeological record of a disappeared culture. The Tellem people inhabited this region between the 11th and 15th centuries before being displaced or assimilated by the Dogon people who live there today. The caves are often situated high up the cliff faces and were accessible only by climbing or using rope ladders, making them well-suited for refuge and storage. The Tellem utilized these natural cavities primarily for burials and as granaries, constructing elaborate mud structures integrated directly into the rock. Archaeological finds from the caves, such as textiles, pottery, and wooden sculptures, have remained exceptionally well-preserved due to the arid climate. Today, the caves are part of the UNESCO World Heritage site of the Cliffs of Bandiagara and remain central to Dogon culture, which still uses these predecessor sites for ritual purposes. Studying Tellem culture provides important insights into environmental changes and migrations in medieval West Africa.
