Grand Mosque of Mopti (Mali)

Weather…

The Grand Mosque of Mopti, also known as the Komoguel Mosque, is a preeminent example of Sudano-Sahelian architecture in Mali. The current structure was built between 1933 and 1935, replacing an earlier mosque constructed in 1908. The building is made entirely of sun-dried mud bricks (banco) and is characterized by the protruding wooden beams (toron) that serve both as decoration and as scaffolding for the annual replastering. Its design echoes the famous Great Mosque of Djenné, featuring three prominent towers that dominate the Qibla wall. As the most important religious center in the city of Mopti, the mosque plays a vital role in the social and spiritual life of the local community. Maintaining the integrity of the mud structure requires regular surface renewals after the rainy season, which is often carried out as a collective community task. Since 2005, the mosque has been on the UNESCO World Heritage tentative list, recognizing its exceptional cultural and architectural significance.
