Holhudhoo is a well organized island in the northern Noonu Atoll, with about 1500 residents. It is known for an unusually engaged school community and for high results in the national Cambridge O-Level exams, which has earned Holhudhoo the informal title of an education island. Extracurricular programs, library initiatives and sports clubs are also unusually active here. The island has its own administration office, a health center, a modern mosque and several boat repair workshops. Economically, life relies on fishing with large pole-and-line boats, small scale agriculture growing watermelons, beans, sweet potatoes and coconuts, and on employment in nearby resorts like Iru Veli, Vakkaru Maldives and Soneva Jani. A public ferry and several speedboats regularly connect Holhudhoo with the atoll capital Manadhoo and Maafaru Airport. Pioneers of local aquaculture, especially for sea cucumbers and reef fish, are also based here.
