Dhigali Haa (Maldives)

Weather…

Dhigali Haa is a significant marine protected area located within the Baa Atoll, which is part of the Maldives' UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. This underwater thila is characterized by its elongated shape and diverse topography, dropping from a reef top at 7 meters to depths exceeding 25 meters. The western side of the reef is particularly renowned for its numerous overhangs and small caves, which are densely adorned with spirited yellow and blue soft corals. Dhigali Haa acts as a crucial spawning ground and habitat for a vast array of marine life, including massive schools of fusiliers, snappers, and batfish. Its ecological value is further enhanced by the presence of apex predators such as reef sharks and seasonal visits from manta rays, drawn by the nutrient-rich currents flowing through the channel. Since its designation in 1995, Dhigali Haa has been a key site for scientific research on coral resilience and biodiversity conservation in the central Maldivian atolls.

📋 Practical info

🧭
Getting there
Reaching this submerged reef requires a boat trip from nearby inhabited islands or resorts in the Baa Atoll region. Dive operators typically organize scheduled boat transfers directly to the location for their guests.
📅
Best season
Diving and snorkeling are possible year-round, thanks to the consistently warm tropical climate. The dry season, from December to April, generally has the clearest underwater visibility and the calmest sea conditions.
⛰️
Terrain & paths
The environment consists solely of open ocean and a submerged reef rising from deep waters. There is no dry land at this specific site, making it an aquatic playground defined by steep coral walls and overhangs.
🎒
What to bring
Scuba diving gear is generally required to fully appreciate the deeper sections of the reef. Divers should bring a dive computer, a surface marker buoy, and appropriate thermal protection like a thin wetsuit or rash guard.
🅿️
Parking
There are no parking facilities as this is an exclusively marine destination accessible only by watercraft. Boats moor at designated points or drift nearby while visitors are submerged exploring the underwater ecosystem.
⚠️
Safety
Due to the depth and potential for unpredictable ocean currents around the rising reef, this site is often recommended for somewhat experienced divers. Always stay close to your buddy and follow the local dive master's briefing.
⏱️
Time needed
A typical visit to this reef consists of a single dive or an extended snorkeling session lasting about 45 to 60 minutes. The overall trip time, including the boat journey from a nearby base, usually spans half a day.
