Gaafaru Reef Protection Zone (Maldives)

Weather…

The Gaafaru Reef Protection Zone is a premier marine sanctuary in the Maldives, encompassing a vast reef system within the Kaafu Atoll. Renowned for its exceptional clarity and biological richness, the area is a vital stronghold for marine conservation. A defining feature of Gaafaru is its collection of historic shipwrecks, most notably the 'Lady Christine,' which have been reclaimed by the sea to become thriving artificial reefs. These submerged structures are now encrusted with spirited hard and soft corals, providing complex habitats for a myriad of tropical fish species. The protection zone is particularly famous for its high density of sea turtles, offering one of the most reliable locations in the archipelago for sightings. The unique geography of the reef, coupled with nutrient-rich currents, supports a dynamic ecosystem that includes manta rays and reef sharks. For snorkelers and divers, Gaafaru presents an underwater landscape where industrial history and natural splendor coexist, underscoring the importance of preserving these fragile coral environments against global environmental pressures.
