Landhoo Ancient Ruins (Maldives)

Weather…

The ancient ruins of Landhoo, known as Maabadhige, are located in the Noonu Atoll and represent one of the most significant archaeological evidences of the pre-Islamic period in the Maldives. They are the remains of a Buddhist stupa, locally referred to as a Hawitta, which once reached an imposing height. This site is a clear indication that Buddhism was a dominant religion in the archipelago before the conversion to Islam in 1153. In the 1980s, the famous Norwegian explorer Thor Heyerdahl investigated the ruins and documented their dimensions as well as the craftsmanship of the stonework. Despite centuries of erosion and human intervention, the foundations are still recognizable and offer valuable insights into early settlement structures. The ruins are surrounded by dense vegetation, which enhances their mystical atmosphere and makes them an important destination for scientific research. The preservation of this site is essential to document the cultural continuity and the diverse religious influences in the history of the Maldives.
