Manadhoo is the capital of Noonu Atoll, about 160 kilometers north of Malé. The island stands out for its unusually well planned urban structure with wide straight streets, clearly defined residential, port and administrative zones and a modern water supply. Around 1900 people live here, and the island hosts the atoll hospital, several schools and the atoll administration office. Manadhoo features a deep, well protected natural harbor that suits various ship classes and supplies the entire atoll. Economically, the region depends on fishing, mainly skipjack and yellowfin tuna, and on agriculture, growing watermelon, beans, pumpkin, peppers and coconuts. Through nearby Maafaru Airport, opened in 2018, Manadhoo is well connected to Malé. Resorts like Velaa Private Island, Soneva Jani and Cheval Blanc Randheli are within easy reach and employ many islanders.
