QMM Ilmenite Mine (Madagascar)

Weather…

The QMM Mine (QIT Madagascar Minerals) is a major mining operation located near Fort-Dauphin in southeastern Madagascar. Majority-owned by Rio Tinto, the mine focuses on extracting ilmenite, a key ore used to produce titanium dioxide. The project encompasses three primary mineral deposits: Mandena, Petriky, and Sainte-Luce, with Mandena being the currently active site. Mining is conducted through dry mining techniques in coastal dunes, where the ore is concentrated on-site before being exported via Port Ehoala. In addition to ilmenite, zircon and monazite are recovered as valuable byproducts. As the mine operates in an ecologically sensitive area, QMM has established extensive biodiversity programs and conservation zones to preserve the unique coastal forest. The mine is the most significant economic driver in the Anosy Region, providing employment and supporting social development programs for the local community.
