It is situated at the mouth of the Morondava River on the Mozambique Channel, boasting a rich history as the heart of the Sakalava Kingdom of Menabe. During the 18th century, it was a powerful political base and a significant hub for regional trade. Today, the city is internationally renowned as the gateway to the iconic Avenue of the Baobabs, located about 20 kilometers to the north. The urban landscape features a mix of colonial-era buildings, bustling markets, and traditional outrigger canoes lining the shore. Its economy relies on fishing, rice agriculture, and a growing tourism sector that serves as a base for expeditions to the Kirindy Forest and Tsingy de Bemaraha. With a population exceeding 60,000, Morondava functions as the economic and administrative center of the west, while maintaining its deep cultural roots through local craftsmanship and traditional customs.
