Fort Dauphin (Madagascar)

Weather…

Tolanaro, historically known as Fort Dauphin, is situated on the southeastern coast of Madagascar and was the first permanent French settlement on the island. The fort was established in 1643 by the French East India Company and named after the Dauphin, the future King Louis XIV. Its strategic location on a peninsula allowed for the control of maritime routes around the Cape of Good Hope. The surrounding area is unique for the meeting of different climatic zones, resulting in extraordinary biodiversity ranging from humid rainforests to arid spiny deserts. Today, Tolanaro is a significant economic hub, internationally connected through the modern Ehoala Port and ilmenite mining operations. Historical ruins of the original fortifications and a museum serve as reminders of the often-turbulent colonial history between settlers and local tribes. The city also acts as a gateway to southern national parks and is famous for its pristine beaches.
