Anakao
Anakao is a scenic fishing village south of Toliara that has preserved its traditional charm to this day. Since there are no paved roads leading to it, most visitors arrive by speedboat, which only enhances the feeling of remote discovery. The coastline features long stretches of white sand and the crystal-clear turquoise waters of the Mozambique Channel. Anakao is the heartland of the Vezo people, sea nomads whose lives are intimately tied to the rhythms of the ocean. Just a short boat ride away lies the uninhabited island of Nosy Ve. It is a sacred site for the local people and home to a significant breeding colony of red-tailed tropicbirds. The island is fringed by a magnificent coral reef, offering top-tier snorkeling opportunities. For wave riders, Anakao also has some of Madagascar's best and most undiscovered surf breaks, offering world-class conditions without the crowds. Accommodations in Anakao are mostly rustic yet welcoming beachfront bungalows. The cuisine is almost entirely based on the daily catch from the sea, featuring fresh grilled fish and lobster. The best time to visit is from May to October, as the region is exceptionally dry and sunny year-round. Anakao is the excellent getaway for travelers seeking an authentic Malagasy experience off the beaten path in a serene and sunny setting.
