Toliara, located on the southwestern coast of Madagascar directly on the Tropic of Capricorn, is a significant port city and the economic heart of the Atsimo-Andrefana region. The city's geography is characterized by a flat coastal plain bordering the semi-arid southern spiny forest ecosystem. Known for its dry and sunny climate, it has earned the nickname 'City of the Sun.' Toliara serves as a crucial trade hub for southern agricultural products, including sisal, cotton, rice, and soap. A prominent feature of the city is its proximity to the Great Reef of Toliara, one of the world's largest coral reef systems, which provides essential coastal protection and harbors immense marine biodiversity. The city is home to the University of Toliara, which is particularly distinguished for its maritime and marine biology research. Historically, the town grew into a strategic regional center during the French colonial era. Today, Toliara is an essential tourism hub and the primary gateway for travelers heading to the Isalo and Zombitse-Vohibasia National Parks, as well as the nearby seaside resorts of Ifaty and Anakao.
