Žuvintas Biosphere Reserve (Lithuania)

Weather…

Founded in 1937, the Žuvintas Biosphere Reserve is Lithuania's oldest protected nature area and holds international prestige as a designated UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. The core of the sanctuary is the exceptionally shallow Lake Žuvintas, which is gradually undergoing a natural process of terrestrialization, surrounded by vast reedbeds and sedge fens. This unique landscape makes the reserve one of the most important avian paradises in Northern Europe. Over 220 bird species have been recorded here, most notably a significant breeding population of the mute swan, for which the lake is renowned. Globally threatened and rare species, such as the aquatic warbler, the Eurasian bittern, and various terns, also find optimal living conditions in these wetlands. Nature enthusiasts can observe this captivating birdlife at close range from the reserve's modern visitor center and specially constructed observation towers without causing disturbance to the wildlife. The reserve also focuses on maintaining traditional agricultural practices in its buffer zones.
