Kalvarija is a small but historically incredibly dense town in southwestern Lithuania, near the border with Poland in the Suvalkija region. Originally founded in the 17th century, the town grew rapidly into a flourishing commercial center in the 19th century, largely due to the establishment of a major horse-drawn post station on the imperial Saint Petersburg, Warsaw route. This impressive post station has survived to this day and remains a major attraction. Kalvarija is distinguished by its exceptionally well-preserved and compact old town, where a unique synagogue complex, consisting of a summer and a winter synagogue, bears witness to the once-large Jewish community. With about 3,800 residents, Kalvarija preserves an authentic and valuable piece of Lithuanian history.
