Meteliai Regional Park (Lithuania)

Weather…

Meteliai Regional Park, established in 1992 in southern Lithuania, is affectionately known as the 'Lake District of Dzūkija'. The park was created to safeguard a remarkable hydrological system dominated by three large lakes: Dusia, Metelys, and Obelija. Lake Dusia, the largest of the trio, features crystal-clear waters and shallow sandy shores, often serving as a local 'sea' during the summer months. This expansive wetland area holds European significance as a crucial staging and feeding ground for tens of thousands of waterfowl, particularly numerous duck and goose species, during their spring and autumn migrations. However, one of the park's most significant zoological treasures is the rare and strictly protected European pond turtle, for which this area serves as one of the most vital sanctuaries in the entire Baltic region. The botanical diversity is equally impressive; in early summer, the park's damp meadows and airy woodlands burst into bloom with numerous rare orchid species, attracting botanists and nature lovers alike.
