Vilkaviškis is located in southwestern Lithuania in the Suvalkija region, near the border with Poland and the Russian Kaliningrad exclave. The city is known for its rich agricultural tradition and as the birthplace of prominent Lithuanian figures, including Jonas Basanavičius, the 'patriarch of the nation'. The cityscape is defined by the Cathedral of the Visitation of the Virgin Mary, an impressive sacred building that was faithfully rebuilt after the destruction of World War II. In the surroundings lies the classicist Paežeriai manor, considered one of the region's most beautiful architectural ensembles and now housing a museum. Historically, Vilkaviškis witnessed the passage of Napoleon and his army in 1812 on their way to Russia. The region is characterized by vast, fertile fields and a strong cultural identity closely linked to the 19th-century Lithuanian national movement.
