This neoclassical masterpiece is a powerful symbol of national and religious endurance. Originally constructed in the late 19th century, the cathedral has endured a series of catastrophic events. It was heavily damaged during World War I and then nearly leveled in 1944 during the intense fighting of World War II. Throughout the Soviet era, the authorities prevented its restoration, leaving the structure as a roofless ruin for decades. It was only after Lithuania's independence was restored that a comprehensive reconstruction project was completed in the 1990s, returning the cathedral to its former glory. The interior is characterized by its bright, soaring spaces and dignified altars, reflecting the solemnity of its role as a bishop's seat. Visiting the cathedral today has a chance to appreciate both its architectural beauty and the profound story of a community that refused to let its heritage vanish.
