Šiluva (Lithuania)

Weather…

Šiluva is a spiritual center of European significance. The town gained worldwide fame through the Marian apparition in 1608, regarded as one of the first officially recognized apparitions in Europe. Today, the impressive Basilica of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary dominates the townscape, a late Baroque masterpiece with a magnificent altar. Right next to it stands the Chapel of the Apparition, a monumental 44-meter-high structure designed by architect Antanas Vivulskis, built exactly over the stone where Mary is said to have appeared. Every September, the 'Šilinės' festival attracts tens of thousands of pilgrims from all over the world. Pope John Paul II visited the site in 1993, highlighting its importance to the Catholic world. Beyond the sacred buildings, Šiluva features a peaceful atmosphere conducive to reflection. A pilgrim center provides information and accommodation for travelers. The surroundings of Šiluva are characterized by rolling hills and forests, good for quiet walks. Culinary-wise, visitors can try simple monastic food or local Lithuanian specialties. A visit is especially recommended during the grand pilgrimage in September or during the quiet spring months when nature awakens.
