Kelmė is a historically significant city in the western Lithuanian region of Samogitia, picturesquely situated on the banks of the Kražantė River. Founded in the 15th century, the city was heavily influenced by the Gruževskiai noble family, who built an impressive Baroque manor here. Today, this manor is considered one of the most beautiful architectural objects in the region and houses a rich local history museum. Kelmė is also known as a historical center of the Protestant Reformation in Samogitia; the local Evangelical Reformed community is among the oldest in the country. Despite facing devastating destruction during World War II, Kelmė has managed to preserve its welcoming character. Today, the town of about 8,000 residents thrives on a mix of living cultural heritage and local agriculture.
