Mažeikiai is the eighth largest city in Lithuania and a major industrial center located in the northwestern part of the country, near the Latvian border. Situated on the Venta River, the town experienced its first significant growth in the late 19th century following the construction of the Libau-Romny and Riga-Mitau railway lines. This led to its rapid development from a minor settlement into a crucial railway junction and trading post. The modern history of Mažeikiai is inextricably linked to the petrochemical industry, as it is home to ORLEN Lietuva, the only oil refinery in the Baltic States. Despite its industrial focus, the city has cultural landmarks such as the Church of the Sacred Heart of Jesus and a regional museum highlighting Samogitian history. Mažeikiai is a key economic engine for Lithuania, contributing significantly to the national GDP through its heavy industry and logistical connections.
