Gates of Dawn (Lithuania)

Weather…

The Gates of Dawn is the sole surviving gate of the original nine city gates of the historical defensive wall of Vilnius, built between 1503 and 1522. The three-story structure achieved global fame due to the chapel that was integrated into the gatehouse in the 17th century. It houses a Renaissance-style painting of the Blessed Virgin Mary Mother of Mercy, adorned with gilded silver, which is widely believed to possess miraculous healing powers. Every day, pilgrims from Lithuania, Poland, and other countries gather to pray on the street in front of the gate or inside the wooden chapel itself. The Gates of Dawn uniquely combines the city's fortified military past with profound religious devotion. In 1993, Pope John Paul II visited this sacred shrine, emphasizing its profound significance for Christians throughout Eastern Europe.
