St. Casimir's Church (Lithuania)

Weather…

St. Casimir's Church is the first Baroque sacred building in Vilnius and a prominent landmark of the Lithuanian capital. Built between 1604 and 1618 by the Jesuit order, it was dedicated to St. Casimir, the patron saint of Lithuania. The architecture is modeled after the Il Gesù church in Rome, yet it incorporates unique local features, such as the grand dome crowned with a replica of the Grand Ducal crown. Throughout the centuries, the church has witnessed a turbulent history: it was damaged by fires, converted into an Orthodox cathedral in the 19th century, and even served as a museum of atheism during the Soviet era. Following Lithuania's restoration of independence, the building was returned to the Jesuits and extensively restored. Its magnificent interior is home to splendid Baroque altars and exceptional acoustics, making it a popular venue for organ recitals. Located in the heart of the Old Town, the church is an essential component of the UNESCO World Heritage site in Vilnius.
