Verkių Regional Park
The Verkių Regional Park, situated in the northern reaches of the capital city Vilnius, features a harmonious blend of nature conservation, historical architecture, and public recreation. Established in 1992, the park spans the steep right bank of the Neris River. Its most outstanding natural monuments are the 'Green Lakes' (Žalieji ežerai). This deep lake system, carved by glacial meltwater, is celebrated for its striking emerald-green coloration, which is naturally produced by a high concentration of dissolved carbonates in the water. The lakes and their surrounding deep forests provide a vital habitat for rare, calcicole (calcium-loving) aquatic plants and support a dense population of various bat species that hibernate in the area's small caves and tree hollows. Culturally, the park is anchored by the magnificent neoclassical Verkiai Palace, which historically served as the opulent summer residence of the Bishops of Vilnius. The palace's expansive landscaped park, with its ancient oak avenues, is a favorite retreat for long walks.
