Church of St. Peter and St. Paul (Lithuania)

Weather…

The Church of St. Peter and St. Paul, located at the Antakalnis roundabout in Vilnius, is widely considered one of the most outstanding masterpieces of Baroque architecture in the entire Baltic region. The building was founded in the late 17th century by the Grand Hetman Mykolas Kazimieras Pacas as a gesture of gratitude for the city's liberation from Russian occupation. While the church's exterior facade, with its classical columns, appears rather simple and austere, the interior holds a truly dramatic surprise. Visitors are surrounded by over 2,000 masterfully crafted, snow-white stucco figures, created over decades by Italian sculptors such as Pietro Perti and Giovanni Maria Galli. These elaborate reliefs depict biblical scenes, mythical creatures, floral ornaments, and historical battles. Another highlight of the interior is the unusual chandelier shaped like an ancient sailing ship. The natural light pouring through the windows accentuates the pure white sculptures, creating an ethereal and heavenly atmosphere.
