Bastion of the Vilnius Defensive Wall (Lithuania)

Weather…

The Bastion of the Vilnius Defensive Wall, commonly referred to by locals as Barbakano, is one of the most fascinating surviving fortifications in Lithuania. It was constructed in the first half of the 17th century in the Renaissance style to protect the capital against the growing threat of Swedish and Russian forces. The defensive complex consists of a distinctive horseshoe-shaped building integrated deeply into the slope of Bokšto Hill, as well as a long, vaulted underground tunnel that once connected it to the city wall. Following severe destruction during the wars of the 17th century, the facility fell into ruin and was almost completely forgotten. However, in the 1980s, the bastion underwent comprehensive archaeological investigation and was meticulously restored. Today, it houses an engaging branch of the National Museum, displaying historical cannons, armor, and weaponry. Additionally, the open terrace of the bastion gives one of the most beautiful vantage points overlooking the red roofs of the Old Town and the Vilnia River.
