Bokong Nature Reserve

Bokong Nature Reserve sits at the edge of the Mafika-Lisiu Pass at over 3,000 meters. It is renowned for its spectacular viewpoints and the impressive Lepaqoa Falls, which often freeze into massive ice columns during winter. The reserve protects an essential highland wetland area that serves as the source for many of Lesotho's rivers. Hikers will find well-marked trails leading through peat mires and along rugged ridgelines. Bird watching is a highlight, with rare species like the Bearded Vulture and Bald Ibis inhabiting the cliffs. The visitor center provides fascinating insights into highland ecology and the critical importance of Lesotho's water resources. The best time to visit is summer (October to March) for blooming wildflowers, or winter for the ice spectacle of the waterfalls. Access is via the tarred road from Pitseng, which winds up the mountain in dizzying curves. Simple self-catering chalets are available for overnight guests right at the cliff edge.
