Katse Botanical Garden (Lesotho)

Weather…

Situated at an altitude of 2,229 meters in the Maloti Mountains, Katse Botanical Garden is the highest of its kind in Africa. It was established in the mid-1990s as a rescue project to transplant and preserve indigenous flora threatened by the construction and subsequent flooding of the Katse Dam reservoir. The garden has since evolved into a premier research center for alpine vegetation, housing a world-class collection of the rare Spiral Aloe (Aloe polyphylla), Lesotho's national flower. Beyond conservation, it serves an educational purpose by showcasing the traditional medicinal uses of highland plants to local communities and visitors. The site has a unique juxtaposition of botanical diversity and monumental engineering, providing wide-open views of the dam and the surrounding rugged highlands.
