This very remote route obligatorily requires a capable 4x4 vehicle equipped for rough terrain. Access is often from deeper within the Maloti mountain network via lightly traveled gravel tracks.

The period from late spring to early autumn has the best chance for a safe passage without dangerous snow blockages. During the harsh winter months, this high-altitude passage often becomes completely inaccessible.

High-altitude dirt and gravel tracks lead travelers into vast, open, and completely unprotected grasslands. The lack of any infrastructure and the harsh conditions make the area a real challenge for nature enthusiasts.

What to bring

Binoculars are highly recommended to observe the rare wildlife on the vast grassy plains from a distance. Warm, windproof clothing and comprehensive vehicle recovery gear are absolute prerequisites for this journey.

Parking

There are no formal parking areas; travelers must pull over safely to the edge of the track if necessary. It is of utmost importance that the parked vehicle does not block the narrow mountain road or endanger others.

The extreme isolation means that in an emergency, help is very far away and cannot arrive quickly. It is strongly advised to travel in a convoy if possible and to carry a satellite phone or an emergency beacon.
