Bokong Nature Reserve (Lesotho)

Weather…

The Bokong Nature Reserve is one of the highest protected areas in Africa, situated at an average altitude of over 2,800 meters near the Mafika Lisiu Pass. It was established to safeguard the vital peatlands and alpine wetlands of the Maloti Mountains, which act as a natural sponge for the headwaters of the Lepaqoa River. The reserve is famous for its striking visitor center, which is perched precariously on the edge of a 100-meter cliff, providing an eagle's eye view of the Lepaqoa Waterfall. During the cold winter months, the waterfall often freezes into a massive, shimmering column of ice, a sight that draws visitors from across the region. Bokong is also home to unique biodiversity, including the rare and endemic Maloti mint beetle, found only in these high-altitude habitats. The landscape is characterized by rugged basalt ridges and vast alpine plateaus, offering hikers a chance to experience the solitude and raw natural beauty of Lesotho's highlands while enjoying some of the most dramatic mountain scenery in Southern Africa.

Best season
The warmer months from November to March are handy for hiking and observing the delicate alpine flora in full bloom. During winter, the reserve frequently experiences severe snowfall, occasionally closing the main access road.

Terrain & paths
The protected area features a striking mix of rugged high-altitude wetlands, rocky outcrops, and sweeping mountainous plains. Several established trails vary in difficulty, offering excellent options for casual walkers and hikers.
🎒
What to bring
High-quality windproof and waterproof jackets are entirely essential to combat the unpredictable alpine weather. Bring sturdy hiking footwear and binoculars for rewarding wildlife viewing across the dramatic highland scenery.
