Lake Qaraoun (Lebanon)

Weather…

Situated in the southern reaches of the Bekaa Valley, Lake Qaraoun is Lebanon's largest artificial body of water, spanning 12 square kilometers. It was created in 1959 with the completion of the Albert Naccache Dam on the Litani River, the longest river in the country. This 61-meter-high concrete dam is a cornerstone of Lebanon's national development, providing essential hydroelectric power and vital irrigation for the surrounding agricultural heartlands of the Bekaa Plain. With a total capacity of 220 million cubic meters, the reservoir is a critical resource for managing the region's water supply during the dry summer months. Despite environmental pressures, the lake remains a significant stopover point for thousands of migratory birds traveling the Great Rift Valley route. The vast expanse of blue water set against the backdrop of the rugged Mount Lebanon and Anti-Lebanon ranges creates a striking landscape. For travelers, it provides a glimpse into the grand scale of Lebanese engineering and the indispensable role of the Litani River in the nation's survival and growth.

📋 Practical info

🧭
Getting there
The lake is easily reached by car via the main roads running through the fertile Bekaa Valley. The primary access points are often near the dam or local lakeside restaurants and leisure facilities.
📅
Best season
Late spring to early autumn is typically the most favorable period for pleasant weather and clear views. Bird watchers often visit during migration seasons in spring and autumn to see various species.
⛰️
Terrain & paths
The area surrounding the reservoir is largely flat to gently rolling agricultural land characteristic of the valley. The immediate shoreline can fluctuate depending on the current water levels of the dam.
🎒
What to bring
Bring a good camera or binoculars, as the expansive lake often hosts interesting migratory birdlife. Sun protection, including hats and sunscreen, is necessary since shade along the shore can be scarce.
🅿️
Parking
Ample parking is usually available at the designated viewing spots, near the dam structure, or at adjacent eateries. These spaces are generally unpaved but accommodate standard passenger vehicles without issue.
⚠️
Safety
Swimming in the reservoir is often restricted or strongly discouraged due to pollution issues and underwater currents. Visitors should observe all posted warning signs near the dam infrastructure.
⏱️
Time needed
A typical stop to admire the massive artificial lake and take photos generally lasts about an hour. Many choose to extend their stay to two or three hours by dining at a nearby restaurant with a view.
