Rashaya is a historic small town perched on the western slopes of Mount Hermon (Jabal el-Sheikh) at the southern edge of the Beqaa Valley. The photogenic, cobblestone old town has retained its 19th-century atmosphere, featuring traditional stone houses with red-tiled roofs, making it a jewel of Lebanese cultural heritage. Rashaya played a pivotal role in the nation's history: in 1943, French mandate authorities imprisoned Lebanese national leaders within its 18th-century citadel (the Citadel of Independence). The day of their release, November 22, subsequently became Lebanon's National Independence Day. The demographic is predominantly Druze, complemented by a notable Greek Orthodox Christian minority. Rashaya was historically a prominent center for local silversmithing, known for delicate filigree work. Thanks to its alpine air and natural surroundings, it is a favored starting point for high-altitude treks up Mount Hermon.
